My helmet is red, white and black the same color of my bike and kit. My wife gives me a hard time about everything matching, including my shoes, gloves, watch, sunglasses, water bottle and Road ID. I guess it gives me the feeling of being on a race team even though that would never be a possibility.
Prehydration has helped me a lot the last couple of years. Whenever I have a long ride coming up I ensure that I take in lots of water the night before. On the ride I rotate one bottle of water and one bottle of gatorade and I haven’t had any problems on long rides including centuries.
I have gone with Brancel the last five years, will be going with them for the sixth straight year this year. It’s a family operation that handles approximately 500 riders. They are big enough to provide several services yet small enough to take care of anything you want. We have shower trucks, power chargers, snacks, laundry service, and…[Read more]
I always try to get 1000-1200 in before Ragbrai. I am at 725 now and feel good about it. I always hit it hard the last four weeks and should be well over 1200 before Ragbrai. I always say if you put the miles in before you can enjoy Ragbrai and not feel like it a chore.
I agree with Ken, the new bike must earn its bands. This will be my ninth Ragbrai but only the third on my current bike. The old bands are in my desk drawer currently but I am thinking about burning them us and spreading their ashes over the route this year…..Good idea Ken.
I haven’t been on here lately so if this has been discussed, sorry. Looking over the entertainment for the overnight towns and I haven’t noticed any national acts. I have done Ragbrai eight times and I think this will be the first without a national act. I know we are going through small town but we have in the past as well and have had an act…[Read more]

I have rode with 23 and 25. Air them to the max and have had one flat in eight years on Ragbrai. I rode through the area where the kids had thrown out tacks and didn’t get a flat. I remember going around the street sweeper that morning and thinking, what a crazy time to schedule to clean the road. I had no knowledge why they were doing that…[Read more]
Bottles work for me. You have so many opportunities to get water along the route. Many times during the day you will see free water. I have never tried it but I think you could go the entire week with free water. I enjoy stopping and buying water and Gatorade from groups or families along the way. I have even reduced my bottles to one since…[Read more]
Rain Gear…..we don’t need no stinking rain gear. That has been my attitude on Ragbrai and for all but a day or two I have been correct. My worst day was three years ago when I started out in a cold rain and it stayed cold and raining almost the entire day, I think I saw less than five other riders with no rain gear on. I remember hanging out…[Read more]
I am 63 years old this will be my ninth Ragbrai, I refuse to ride in pace lines on Ragbrai and feel that they are the most dangerous thing on Ragbrai. I saw where a couple of people say they like to ride fast. Ride fast on your own, if you need help getting across Iowa do more training. I have seen several accidents on Ragbrai and most are…[Read more]
My budget is $1000.00 for everything. Includes $175 to register, $315 to my charter, the rest for food, beverages, showers and usually a t-shirt or two. I have done this eight years and have always had a few bucks left at the end of the week. Some years I have come home with over $100 left and one year I had like $20 out of the $1000 budget. I…[Read more]
Lawnchair….I should know better than to post this but I have a couple of questions. How much pie do you eat spending 1500-1900 dollars crossing Iowa. This will be my ninth and I do whatever I want and spend much less…..Also you keep saying 500 people are boycotting Iowa this summer, really 500 whole people. If its so terrible I would expect…[Read more]
