I don’t think it is bad to make some profit as long as a wise business decision is made. If some one has more money to spend and like to have premium service, what’s wrong to take the money and serve the need? We have RAGBRAI truck but it doesn’t prohibit Pork Belly to charge extra to haul their customer’s packages, or vice versa.
I’d hate to see…[Read more]

There is Dieter. He’s been having some opinion about RAGBRAI.
I won’t be surprised that more changes to come to RAGBRAI after 50 year. Best wishes.

Do you need to check on it frequently while you ride?
If the answer is NO, your best choice may be a Garmin Forerunner 245. Light, very affordable, reliable, long battery life.
But if you need to see the numbers often but don’t need navigation, Garmin Edge 130 is your best choice.
If you need navigation, Garmin Edge 530.

I understand what Ben feels. It’s unfortunate that he only rode on 2021 and 2022. In my last opinion, those are the two of the worst in the recent years because of the pandemic, (perhaps) RAGBRAI personnel change and the inflation.
For me and my group, we have been enjoying the Iowa hospitality from our host families and various hosting…[Read more]

I happened to start my RAGBRAI in Sioux City and has been hooked even since. I’d say getting there on Friday will be much preferred.
* You can get better chance to pick parking spot
* Then you have the full Saturday to watch the whole starting town event happening with your first-timer excitement.
* The first time is special. And the first day is…[Read more]

@Denton
I have to agree with you reasoning about staying with Ragbrai site or staying with your aunt.
Unless you have your own driver, your team transportation. Otherwise, why do you want to handle all the hassles of staying off-site? If you have special needs, you want to make sure those are feasible in the constraints.

I guess there must have a lot of people guessed right.
Sioux City, Storm Lake have been leaked out before the announcement. Ames (Iowa State U), Des Moines, Coralville (U Iowa) and then ending in Davenprot are almost locked in for RAGBRAI L.
Who have figured out Carroll and Tama-Toledo?
Niles replied to the topic How to better motivate "bandits" to register in the forum RAGBRAI L – 2023 1 year, 1 month ago
Probably if RAGBRAI can persuade vendors to charge bandits one-dollar extra per transaction. But, even if everyone makes 10 transactions per day, bandits will figure out it is still cheaper to stay as bandits.

I got one today, the second one after I received on the route.
Boys and Gals, have you? Even if you didn’t ride the full 105 Miles (Cheaters, you got a out of jail card, courtsey of RAGBRAI, Shhh!).

Steve, for a one-night-stander, you’ll be forgiven for slipping away. But for the rest of “for better, for worse, in sickness and in health” us, we’ll be there.

@Rob, yeah, the bag piper. I think he must be the same guy who stole the show previous evening at Pocahontas Golf Course.
BTW, the music group playing at the golf course club house is also very entertaining with plenty of seats to sit down. Along with the short-to-none waiting line for food, it makes one of the best mass overnight sites.

Be a big boy at least and focus on enjoying your own ride. He didn’t drive an 18-wheel to crash you.
Did you feel to be diminishes by:
* the next guy with a 10K+ bike?
* the old guy with shabby bike to be your eyesore
* the 70-year old lady still rode faster than you
* the big guy with flash jersey
* the speedo guy without a sunburn
* and so on,…[Read more]

Weather! definitely!
After 5.5 hour weather delay to get Sergeant Bluff and then to use my body weight to hold my tent from blowing away by the hot, strong wind, how can I expect all week cool weather especially during all nights.
Niles started the topic Best Food This Year in the forum RAGBRAI XLIX – 2022 1 year, 4 months ago
Most of us should have got a taste of inflation this year. But good stuffs are still around.
1. Iowa Pork Producers Association: $6 for a big, juicy pork chop.
2. Serv Global @ 2 miles before Rodman: the best creamy Mac n cheese with bacon. $8 for fine dining quality in full meal portion.
3. St. James Lutheran Church at Mason City: $10 dinner…[Read more]

no, just myself. My team bus will haul everything for me to the camping ground or host family.

I’m flying to Sioux City Airport this year. What a rarity!
It seems to be a short distance. Less than two miles?

Frankly, if you think the shuttles are expansive, it will be very difficult to find another alternative, especially for a special event in a small town in today’s inflation/labor shortage time. I remember another person mentioned a while ago that he was asked about one gram for a 30-mile ride to the nearest airport?
One alternative you can think…[Read more]
Niles replied to the topic Advice for our SAG driver? in the forum RAGBRAI XLIX – 2022 1 year, 8 months ago
Our driver always meets up at meeting town, normally not earlier than 12:00. Set up a canopy to allow us and old friends to drop by, have a lunch break, a couple drinks, spirited or non. Then take it up by 2:30 and drive to overnight town. In rare occasion when we don’t have a hosting family, text us where to find the bus.

Still going strong. Our team was the first one arrived last year.
