Let DMR continue the west-east route and TJ start a new east-west route. The two routes make an X shape and meet on Iowa State Fairgrounds on Wednesday. After the big brawl, each rider will have the choice of continuing the original route or turning back for the either East or West half of the X.
I don’t know what the cause of the e-bike hate. If I were a shrinker, I could make a publishable case study.
RAGBRAI is a ride, not a race. How you finish your RAGBRAI is only your accomplishment, whether you self-powered or not, use you hands, or your feet, or even going backward. If you feel your great effort and accomplishment are depreciated…[Read more]
Jeff, yeah, that’s the party I was talking about. Our group had spent too much time on towns and craft beer tents. Thus we were hesitant whether we wanted to go the party after we heard the music over the corns. But fortunately, our curiosity took us there. Walking town the driveway and seeing the party at first sight, our minds were blown away.…[Read more]
1.) On Karras Loop, going counter-clock wise and thus shortened the total distance by about 10 miles?
2.) Bypass the U-shape section of route through Geode State Park and thus shortened by about 5 miles?

I always admire our hosts’ generosity regardless whether they own a MacMansion or a modest cottage. I really don’t understand the people who complaining their hosts not treating them royally with Ritz-Carlton. It reminds a rookie in our team a couple years ago who complained to RAGBRAI about a host family’s bathroom. It remains one of the team’s joke.
I was in Marne the Saturday before start for the team bus party last year. Played sand volleyball, got blue goatee makeup, pedicure, received a unicorn tiara, and of course cold beer, all in the Roadhouse Bar. Definitely I’ll go back there this year.
Although I said e-bike is not very practical for RAGBRAI, I don’t want to take a fundamentalistic stand on RAGBRAI bicycle eligibility. E-(assisted)-bike is not a tank, not a truck, not a car, not a motorcycle. It is more like a so called “human powered” bike and there is no bigger safety issue than any other “human powered” bicycle.
I think e-bike might be not a great idea for practical reason. It doesn’t have the range for a whole day ride. It will be hard to find power outlet to charge overnight if you stay in camping ground. It helps to climb but there is enough serious long and steep hills in RAGBRAI to justify the weight penalty you’ll have to pay for the majority time…[Read more]
