I ride frequently around Madison County from Bradley High School near Hilliard. Would like to have company to train with. Rode Ragbrai last year and can give you some of the details. PM me if you are near Columbus.

Three of us from Ohio took one car to Davenport (end town), rented a mini van one way to Omaha, camped Friday night about half way at a state park. Advantages- (A)no boxing or protecting bikes on shuttle (B) Cost was about the same as one person’s shuttle
I think this plan works when larger cities are near both the start and finish since one way…[Read more]
Rob Erskine started the topic Traffic in Onawa Saturday morning in the forum RAGBRAI XLVI – 2018 5 years, 4 months ago
Newbie question–We are on Pork Belly Ventures for our charter. Will there be a terrific traffic jam getting into and out of Onawa on Saturday morning? We are going to drop off riders and gear then head to Omaha to take back the rental car. What times are typically less busy?

You should probably email them with the question. They have been very responsive with my newbie questions. You might gather up enough other travelers on this forum to share a minivan, drive to Onawa, then one person return the car on Saturday and ride the shuttle back. I think it is about one hour each way.

Look at Pork Belly’s site (2018 updates). They mention shuttles from Omaha airport on Saturday to Onawa for $40. You might want to contact them because they recommend people to fly in on Friday and may have other shuttles. I don’t think you have to be using them for the rest of the week.
Rob Erskine replied to the topic Hammock Camping? in the forum RAGBRAI XLVI – 2018 5 years, 7 months ago
Some people on Goba in Ohio sling their hammocks under the semi trailers. They use carabiners and are set up in minutes. They stay dry unless it really storms. The negative they are the first ones awake when people start putting their bags in the truck. I’m not sure whether the luggage trucks or charters permit it on Ragbrai. I saw a picture…[Read more]
Rob Erskine started the topic Boxing bikes for shuttle in the forum RAGBRAI XLVI – 2018 5 years, 8 months ago
We plan to use Pork Belly Ventures for our charter. They recommend boxing your bike to transport. I assume front wheel and pedals off. What happens with handlebars? Off or just turned? Any experience with using pipe insulation as padding if you don’t box? I’m not much of a mechanic and realize that there are plenty around the start town…[Read more]

How far to people go when breaking down their bikes? I assume wheels and pedals. Are handlebars off or just turned? I think I’m more prone to pipe insulation and bubble wrap.

Looks like a fun day. Lots of stops to relax and fuel up to get to then next town.

We are coming in from Ohio so it would mean that one of us would ride west to the start town (300 miles),
back to the end town (300 miles) then back to the start town (300 miles). That is a lot of hours criss crossing Iowa. I’m just trying to think outside the (bike) box.

Newbie question– We are thinking of driving bikes and gear to start town, then shuttling vehicle back to end town. It would save at least a couple of us from the bus fee and boxing our bikes. Does anyone ever pay a local to take the car to the end town and leave it for us? Seems they could make some serious money moving cars east and…[Read more]
Rob Erskine started the topic Options for Finish to Start town. in the forum RAGBRAI XLVI – 2018 5 years, 10 months ago
We are 3 newbies that are planning to use one of the larger charter companies. The bus from finish town to the start town before the ride seems kind of pricey. Do people get creative and drive themselves to the start town, then pay a local to take their car to the finish town? Any other ways to not use the charter shuttle?
