My son did RAGBRAI with me for his first time when he was 14. All the advice here is excellent. Get him used to communicating with other riders and also listening for communications. FSU – I don’t like the tight shorts for the same reason you mention. For at least the last 15 years I’ve been wearing the mountain bike shorts. They do good for me. Watch the pads because some of them, when walking around, looks like you are wearing Depends and carrying a full load. You don’t need thick pads to be effective, just good ones.

The most difficult sections of the route is when people stop and there is no getting around the mass. No big deal. Just take your time, go with the flow, and keep it safe. I’ve started late and I’ve started early. It all depends on your preference. Typically I try to leave the camp site by 6:00 sharp. If you leave at 6:15 or later it is much different.
