This is why I feel Mark Wyatt should step down as head of the IBC. His credibility and the credibility of the IBC has been tarnished by this. I no longer feel he can adequately lobby or be an advocate on behalf of cyclists in the state of Iowa.

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition endorsed RAGBRAI today. It was announced on their Facebook page. I’m happy to see they came to their senses.

I too would have started RAGBRAI earlier than I did. My uncle has had a team since the late 90s and had brought up the idea of riding it in the past. I always blew the idea off. Why in the hell would I want to ride a bike across the state? Oh, how little I knew about how it would impact my life.

I don’t think the gravel loop is going anywhere. It’s a part of the ride now (just like the Karras loop). Dieter is a fan of gravel riding as well, so I would think it would be here to stay. If anything, I think more stuff will be added to RAGBRAI to make it more appealing to a younger crowd whilst keeping the appeal there for riders 35 and over.

I ride RAGBRAI because I love the culture. I was asked by my uncle in 2006 if I would drive the support truck for his team. I had a few RAGBRAI experiences before this (handing out water in 1988 as a 10 year old, partying at Ankeny’s Christmas in July in 2000, and my aunt and uncle’s wedding in Iowa Falls in 2004). I should also point out that my…[Read more]

Here’s a link to a story about the beer for reference:

I saw it a couple weeks ago at the Hy-Vee in Urbandale.

I’m not sure of the details of the financial relationship but Big Grove Brewing out of Iowa City/Solon is a RAGBRAI sponsor. They made “Tailwind” last year which had last year’s logo on every can. Does that answer your question?

Bernard, that’s a great route. However, I don’t think we are going to go to Dubuque on account of that other ride starting there. I would say Bellevue stands a better chance to being the end town now. Let me tweak the final day for a Bellevue finish.

Perhaps the right people need to create a rival to the IBC. In my view, they’ve made themselves irrelevant. Or at the very least, Mark Wyatt should resign.

Joseph, I can’t say that I disagree with a single word you said. This entire situation is ridiculous. I’m a little pissed at the Iowa Bike Coalition for instantly endorsing TJ’s ride the day after it was announced. I kind of feel it delegitimized the entire organization.
Ken Reed replied to the topic 2020 Jerseys in the forum RAGBRAI XLVII – 2019 4 years, 4 months ago
It IS interesting how TJ has rarely said a word other than the route reversal announcement. I’m still not convinced IR will actually happen.

Really? I hadn’t heard that yet.

Yeah, the end towns tend to get the short end of the stick. The only end town I’ve ever stayed in overnight was Dubuque, only because we had teammates who lived there. It’s just the nature of the beast.

In my 13 RAGBRAIs, I’ve been to CB three times now and it seems that they underwhelmed each time. The bigger towns have more money on hand so they throw a ton of it at their set up. They are pretty much destined to lose cash on it. The smaller start towns put on a better show and have an better environment. They are almost guaranteed to make…[Read more]

Is it really RAGBRAI’s fault the town lost money? A lot of these towns come out ahead. So, with that being said, it’s really on towns and how they spend the money to set everything up. I’ve seen in the past where a town says it lost money yet a few years later, they apply again. There’s always more to a story.

Not to mention increased chance of headwind and riding into the sunset every day.

$75? Where are you seeing that? The jerseys are $65 like they’ve always been. The bibs are $75.
