Of all the cross-USA routes, the ACA (formerly the Bike Centennial route) is the hardest. The Lewis and Clark route avoids the highest rockies. The highest elevation is about 6000 feet. (vs 12,000+ in colorado). From the Mississipi River to the east there are countless options.

Generally the rains blow through in 1 to 2 hours. Just sit it out and you can stay dry. Ride fast enough and you can stay in the rain all day. Check the radar app on your smart phone.
