When you come to a significant hill, do you peddle down to keep your momentum up, or do you try to conserve energy for the long days ride and coast. I personally try to limit my energy output and tend to coast down, so as to not expend too much effort. 75 miles for me is tough enough, so I take advantage of gravity every chance I get.
IA-22, is not much fun on any given day, but on ragbrai, i bet it will be fine. What year did Ragbrai last pass through Hills? Mid 90s???? I see we do not hit sand road until after Hills. That makes for a much hiller route, but it does let us grab a brew at The Old 218 Tap.
Maybe I should have started a new thread, but this one was obliquely related.
What are some of the oldest T-shirts folks still have from ragbrai’s past? My Sagbrai T shirt was lost several years back, now my oldest is from 1983. Eleven was special year for me. I bet Bill has a nice collection.
I like hills too, But I prefer the kind that go on many miles at a gradual incline. I got almost 4k of elevation rise on a ride last fall in S. Nevada. Left Henderson and went to the damn and back. Not sure the % elevation rise, but it was MUCH easier than D2 after Essex.
