I read that the B4 and B5 variants of COVID may spread even outdoors. It is not as likely as indoors, but possible. That is why I wore a mask whenever I got off my bike to walk through the towns. I would get food and refreshments, find an open space to enjoy them without my mask, while watching the crowd from a distance. My friend’s wife who was…[Read more]
A friend who rode RAGBRAI with me was positive for COVID on Monday after the ride. His wife who gave him a ride home also got it. I did not. I wore an N95 mask whenever we reached the crowded streets of a pass- through or overnight town. I avoided going indoors as much as possible and wore an N95 mask if I went into a building. I got a few odd…[Read more]
One of the better things about this RAGBRAI was the polka band in Pocahontas. It was nice to see a town choose music that reflected the history of the original settlers, in this case Czech. On the downside was the people in charge of the sound system way over amplified much of the live performers. We had to move a block or two away from the…[Read more]
I completed my first full RAGBRAI last year. I started road biking at the age of 57 in 2018. I have completed three 100-mile rides in the past 4 years in moderately hilly Johnson County. I enjoyed the century rides but was wiped out the day after. I also had the benefit of sleeping in my air-conditioned house after my century rides and did not…[Read more]
Has RAGBRAI reported the statistics for the 2021 ride? Number of registered riders? Number of week-long riders? What states and countries riders came from? It would be interesting to see how they compare to pre-COVID rides. Was there a report on how much funding was sent back to the hosting communities?
I was careful all week: only eating outside, wearing a mask whenever I went indoors and when walking my bike through the crowded parts of pass-through and meeting towns. I saw only a few other RAGBRAI riders doing the same.
My biggest concern was the Bed and Breakfast that I had reserved in Le Mars. The host family was unvaccinated and did not…[Read more]
Waterloo did a good job as an overnight town. Rolling into the city I was greeted by workers at two different businesses that were passing out refreshing freezer pops. There was a good bike trail that I rode to my nephew’s house in Cedar Falls. I was impressed by both the downtown and the riverfront including the waterfront trail. The river-side…[Read more]
We had a reservation at an AirBnB near Le Mars. When we arrived we found out that the host family is unvaccinated and does not wear masks. Even though we are vaccinated we did not feel comfortable staying in their house. Fortunately we were able to find a hotel room in Sioux City.
