We are from Powell Ohio, just north of the Columbus beltway. This will be our 4 Ragbrai in a row. We have camped, used host housing and hotels and last year we pulled a pop up camper. We have not decided our method for this year.

Scott,
As of now, we are planning on doing RAGBRAI in lieu of IR. I don’t get too caught up in the politics and personal feelings of people associated with the recent news. My wife didn’t like some of the aspects of the IR announcement and the fact that it is scheduled for the same week. I look at it a bit more pragmatically. I just figured it was…[Read more]

Hello Scott,
My wife & I live in the Powell Ohio area (just north of Columbus beltway) and have ridden RAGBRAI each of the last 3 years. We have a small group here in Powell that ride together on weekends. If you are close by and are interested in joining us just send me your e-mail address and I will add you to the contact list. Most people in…[Read more]

Yeah, there were some very rough roads this year. I did a lot of standing to take some of the punishment off my rear.
Note for Ragbrai: Perhaps the towns/counties could be given some guidance on how to mark these obstacles. There should be more than a simple squiggly orange circle around the pothole. I like it when they mark the hole with a…[Read more]

My better half also made a strawberry/rhubarb pie last week. I am not much of a “sweets” eater but did partake in a small sliver. Mile progression has dropped a little but still right around 1800 so far. Sending the bike in Thursday for its pre Ragbrai overhaul.
Roy Trent replied to the topic Weather during RAGBRAI in the forum RAGBRAI XLVII – 2019 1 year, 10 months ago
As for rain, I just carry a light rain jacket which I have not worn in 3 years. I am usually soaked from sweat anyway but the jacket will help with wind chill if needed.
For the heat, we leave early in the morning and spend a little less time in some of the pass thru towns. I like to get in early, GET OUT OF THE SUN ASAP, get cooled off and then…[Read more]

Here is a link from the Council Bluffs page. Shows Mid America complex site and you can see the camping areas.

Some random thoughts from another “wide body”:
I am 235 lbs, 55 yr old with a little “done lop disease”. My flat speed averages about 17 but I do a lot of hills to get my legs ready to pull all this weight around. This will be my 3rd consecutive Ragbrai. Physically, I find the ride fairly easy. Although, about day 4 I do start to feel a little…[Read more]

Thanks, that helps. Although not specifically shown, we assume the bag truck will be there in the Mid-America complex. Looks like the tire dip will be easy also.

yeah, I get it. we are just deciding where we are staying Sat night and want to base it a little on where the trucks will be.

Does anyone know the Sunday morning bag drop location in Council Bluffs?
Also, which road we will be on heading east out of town?

I rode with a group of guys yesterday in an Ohio Ride 2 Recovery Honor Ride who work with vets and use cycling as a tool. The group is “Team RWB” – Red White and Blue. There are branches all over the country and they are planning to do Ragbrai this year. Currently, they have about 30 riders and are fully self supported. I think you can reach out…[Read more]

We have had a fairly good spring and early summer. I have about 1500 miles (400 inside trainer- 1100 outside) and about 50,000 ft of climbing split between Ohio and Virginia. Lots of 30-35 mile rides. Just started working on distance. Was able to recently do a 50,85 and 65. The 65 yesterday had a 17% in it at the mid point. Now I need to start…[Read more]

Currently, my wife and I in our 50’s (and potential driver) are in as a 3 person team from Columbus Ohio. This will be our 3rd Ragbrai and we have used host housing in the past (with a couple of camping nights when housing was not available). We are open to adding 2 additional and perhaps an alternate driver and using an RV this year.
We are laid…[Read more]

All the above have good points. Much like Ken, over the years I have worked my way thru flats, clips and clipless(sdp-Ls: “Look” type pedals). Having done 100 milers in each type, I much prefer the efficiency of a stiff shoe and clipless pedals. While tennis shoes are fine for a 5 miler to go get ice cream:), I can’t imagine doing 60-70 miles each…[Read more]

I have had several close calls but luckily I have not been hit-yet. Three years ago it seemed like I was completely invisible and every car either side swiped me, cut me off or turned into my lane. I switched to wearing bright yellow gear (helmet, socks, sun sleeves etc.), contrasting colors etc, I guess this and assuming every car is driven by a…[Read more]

Just catching up on recent posts to last year’s original question. I started hitting Zwift in mid January as temps have been cold here in Columbus. I think I have in about 400 miles so far. I was in Virginia this week and got in about 50 miles and 3500 ft in real outdoor riding. Zwift really helps me in getting prepped to hit the road and start…[Read more]
