Why is only one ride in the best interest of all riders? Would one flavor of ice cream, one brand of automobile, one flavor of beer be in the best interest of all? Some riders I have encouraged to try RAGBRAI have immediately dismissed the idea because of SIZE which matters greatly to them, far too many people, long lines, crowded roadways,…[Read more]
“TJ is either being political or opportunistic. I don’t care for either.”
BarryT: Neither of those. He wished to be transparent and truthful with the many riders who questioned “where does my merchandise and rider fee dollar go…to the Des Moines Register corporate coffers or stay with RAGBRAI?” TJ was not permitted to go on the record and p…[Read more]
I love a northern route…not so much the southern routes. Iowa’s Ride could be a step back in time…hopefully I will never again see a poo pyramid in the morning. I am really interested to see where the members of the “RAGBRAI Crew” show up. You know…..those couple dozen guys and gals in blue shirts that have volunteered for years, even…[Read more]
Mike Draper of the megalithic t-shirt store, five locations in three states, has totally backed the newspaper. No surprise there, their politics are as parallel as rail road tracks. Mike is a very savvy business guy and knows who butters his bread with free butter.…[Read more]
Nico ZZZ: The Little Stoker and I have biked CNC twice years ago. Pack warm clothes for that first day in the mountains and rain gear. Both years it rained four of the seven days of the ride. Not just a sprinkle but rain…in the day…all day. There was a weather pattern that circled and picked up moisture over the ocean and dumped that…[Read more]
RAGBRAI has sponsored and mentored beginning in the spring, for many years, The Dream Team composed of school age kids. One of the many reasons being to increase youth participation. You, as a parent, seeing kids participating in the ride would be more likely to bring your youngsters on future rides.
The merchandise line has been expanded to…[Read more]
People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it. From Men in Black.
Predicting peoples actions is risky business. Truman over Dewey and Trump over Clinton…both were a cinch to go the other way. Bikes to You out of Grinnell will run a charter and get this….many have asked for this…..rent you a bicycle for the week!!!!
“Are the towns that “the other side” is negotiating with the same towns that former staff were working with as Ragbrai employees?” No, there has been no “negotiating”.
Seems to me that some two hundred letters go out to Iowa communities asking if they wish to host RAGBRAI as either an overnight or pass through town. Based on replies and com…[Read more]
Beebs: Yes, the Milwaukee Sentinel put on the first SAGBRAW…Sentinel’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Wisconsin. The newspaper patterned their ride after RAGBRAI and ran it for a few years. Then Wheel and Sprocket took over the ride and it became Sprocket’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Wisconsin. Then Eric and Kathy Schramm took the ride and…[Read more]
The comments made by the Chris Cakes vendor are puzzling. Food vendors have never been affiliated with, selected by or placed in any location by the DMR RAGBRAI director or his crew. Food vendors are not a service provided by RAGBRAI. Other rides in other states is a different story, I can remember having pancakes for breakfast four days in a…[Read more]
Who would be the master of ceremonies at the Thunderdome?
Sunflower: I have settled on Woody Harrelson.
At to RAGBRAI 2020……….Bubba’s Pampered Pedalers have opted for Iowa’s Ride. Other charters will follow. The Iowa Bicycle Coalition has endorsed Iowa’s Ride. Bike Iowa with no real dog in the hunt will be neutral. “Switzerland” he…[Read more]
I would prefer a beer summit to calm the swirling waters. But please….none of that Tailwind that was RAGBRAI’s 2019 beer, one was enough for me. And certainly not Busch Light which WAS my go-to ride beer before they kicked Carson King to the curb. For me a dark lager, New Belgium’s 1554 would be just dandy.
Sunflower: Much enjoyed your link to Burge…iowahawkblog…gave me a smile, a chuckle and even a snort. Thanks. And, the duty officer at the newsroom has locked the thread. I must consider that a noteworthy accomplishment. “Let no sunshine in lest some be enlightened.” A. Non
The best outcome for all would be that the DMR – Gannett – GateHouse Media would sell RAGBRAI to TJ’s LLC. The rights to bike rides are bought and sold from time to time. As example the first large Wisconsin ride patterned after RAGBRAI was sponsored by a newspaper, since then sold a couple times. Forget which newspaper, help me out here…[Read more]
