I’ll be the goofball wearing bright colored crocs with odyssey pedals on my Fairdale Weekender drop. After 3 RAGBRAI’s my wife thinks I need a new pair – but I’ll retire them after this season. I’ll have nearly 12,000 miles on them. It’s the only shoes I wear when biking from April > October in MN.
Hey fellow Loon! Long range forecasts can be fickle but it does look hot.
A few years ago I sewed a queen sheet to a fleece blanket that works very well for me. I use a therma rest pad & when it is hot I lay on the fleece blanket with the sheet partially covering me… Really hot both battery fans pointed at me from opposite sides. If it is…[Read more]
So… forecast calls for highs of low to mid 90’s with dew points in the 70’s. Possible heat index will exceed 100 degrees. Folks in the southern states would laugh watching our TV weather folks… Its like a critical emergency up here!
I don’t happen to like hot humid weather, but I need to get my hydration down pat to prevent cramping…[Read more]
I don’t use rain gear unless it is quite cool. In the summer months- it seems that you either get wet from wearing a rain jacket (perspiration) or you get wet from the rain. Either way – with modern biking clothing you dry out quickly. During a heavy downpour – it is a great time to make friends under awning, visiting a farm couple on their…[Read more]
I would love to do the gravel loop, but am a little intimidated to do an 80 mile 4000′ of climb on day 1 in the Loess Hills area of western Iowa. Also, I’m kind of a neat freak with my bike & getting it full of grunge without having cleaning facilities following the day is another reason to put it off.
Speak with your doctor about blood sugar mgmt and dehydration. You will be burning off carbs at a higher rate than at home. I suffered from dehydration and many Type II meds may make dehydration worse. I now suspend my metformin medication (on drs orders) during the week of RAGBRAI & watch my sugar intake towards evening. I am a salty…[Read more]
I used to enjoy cross country skiing… Now my hips and back complain when I trot up the hills, so I bike all winter in Minneapolis.
Winter biking is simply a matter of dressing in layers and not leaving much skin exposed. Wicking layers next to your body and wool on top of that. I don’t have the budget for ventented biking shell… so I…[Read more]
Like others – the speed is the issue. In Minneapolis I am seeing more and more of these. The congested bike paths around the city lakes have a speed limit of 10 mph. It is rarely enforced – but in my opinion if a rider wants to ride 15-20+ miles per hour it is time to ride on the road in the bike lanes or with cars… I would like to see a…[Read more]
I have switched from coffee to tea and am wondering where I may be able to find a reliable source for hot water on RAGBRAI. I am also considering bringing my own blend of oatmeal and dried fruit for breakfast – creating a need for hot water. Many of the breakfast options are not very heart healthy and am considering additional options.
