Registration for Great Iowa Fall Ride Open!

I’m not looking to have the “why you should register” or “why bandits are bad” conversation here.
Again, this isn’t intended to be a “should you or shouldn’t you register” conversation/debate. It’s a “how can we better motivate people to register instead of shaming them into it” conversation. Any other ideas?
I originally posted in re…[Read more]

Oh please will the blessed RAGBRAI gods find it within their mercy to forgive this poor petulant little soul who chose to ride bandit after years and years of dutifully paying any and all fees for riders, vehicles and drivers?
The original question was how can those who ride “bandit” be convinced to change their ways and register for the ride.…[Read more]

I think you might be giving Walmart shoplifters a bit too much credit. I doubt many of them think that far ahead.
Also, Walmart never painted itself as a charitable entity. I’m sure the Walmart corporation is philanthropic with some portion of their profits, but it is not their primary reason for being. It has always been presented as a for…[Read more]

It’s all about perceived value. I have done this ride registered and un-registered. I have gone self contained and with a team. I have had an RV and I have done it with a van, trailer, and tent.
For many years I operated under the assumption that some meaningful portion of the dollars coming in from registrations was funneled back to the…[Read more]

I got this the other day in my email:
Thank you for your registering for the private link to this year’s RAGBRAI Route Announcement Party on Friday, January 28th, 2022.
At this time, we are making our online live stream link public to serve the majority of riders and RAGBRAI fans who are unable to make the party or not comfortable attending due…[Read more]

I am 200lbs and I run 90psi in my 25mm Continental 5000’s. The ride is buttery smooth.
cmparsley replied to the topic Shuttles in Council Bluffs in the forum Miscellaneous 4 years, 2 months ago
Council Bluffs really f’ed up this year. Our team was originally placed about 8 miles away from the expo area, at a retirement facility with several other groups, nowhere near a shuttle stop. So we ended up finding a different camping spot on our own. And Council Bluffs wasn’t the only town to do that to our group. Yet all the big charters got…[Read more]

I talked to the Walmart store manager, the top guy, on Monday, July 8th. I asked about RV parking and camping, as well as long term parking. They have a huge lot and I figured as long as you picked a spot as far from the entrance as possible, it wouldn’t be a problem. He said that after 24 hours, they may tow your vehicle. He said RV’s are…[Read more]

I spoke with the store manager at the Walmart and he said 24 hours is the max for parking in their lot. After that, they will tow. Not very friendly if you ask me.
cmparsley replied to the topic Riding alone in the forum Miscellaneous 4 years, 2 months ago
My first RAGBRAI I rode alone as well. I actually loaded everything on my bike and rode solo from where I lived at the time to the overnight town. Then I rode the route the next day.
It was scary rolling down my driveway knowing that I had 80 miles to ride followed by a 72 mile day and it was all on me to get it done. This experience…[Read more]

I for one would trust a local news source over some email newsletter from a charter service. Not to mention that I bet TJ would fight to the bitter end to make sure we can dip our tires in the actual river, not some pond in some park.

Patience. This is year 11 of using hosts. We have yet to have a single town not get back to us with a place to park. The latest we have ever heard has been 4 days prior to ride start. You will hear back assuming you filled out the forms and paid the respective fees for each town.
cmparsley replied to the topic Atlantic or Winterset host? Or could we tag along with your team at your host? in the forum Miscellaneous 4 years, 2 months ago
Every overnight town will have an official RAGBRAI campground available for any registered riders. In the past, people have “tagged along” and surprised hosts with more people than they expected. This has been so much of a problem that TJ actually discussed it in the team meeting this year. He said if it becomes an issue, they could pull your…[Read more]

Looks to me like they will be contacting you. Unless you have a group of 15 or less, then you could fill out the housing request application like the rest of us have done.
If that answer isn’t what you are looking for, here is a link to their contact form:

cmparsley replied to the topic Tri bike at ragbrai in the forum Miscellaneous 4 years, 3 months ago
Any bike is welcome on RAGBRAI.
That being said, my personal stance on aerobars are leave them for the training rides and triathlons. There are just too many people of widely varying levels of skill to be using aero bars. Being able to grab brake levers in an instant might just keep you out of trouble.
And just be prepared to hear, “How was…[Read more]
cmparsley replied to the topic CO2 inflator recommendations in the forum RAGBRAI XLVII – 2019 4 years, 3 months ago
A couple points (from a mechanic of many years):
1. Get a CO2 inflator with a valve. Not all inflators are created equal. Some will empty their contents when the cylinder is attached to the pump head.
2. Whatever you get, purchase extra cylinders and practice at home until you are comfortable using your pump. You don’t want the first time…[Read more]

I would like to offer up my RAGBRAI experience as an alternative. I have never used a charter. I do remember being in awe of the scale of the PBV tent city on my first RAGBRAI 12 years ago. Not knowing what the deal was, I approached after spotting beer. The guy at “the gate” rather rudely asked if I was a part of that group. When I said no,…[Read more]
