I’ve got the Specialized Hot Rock my son road from 7-13. Its a hybrid with inverted tread smooth tires and the correct gearing for RAGBRAI. The upright riding position is an easier way to start out a child than drop bars but either are do-able. If you’re interested we can talk.
That’s the vendor I spoke with. He had great food. So when is the IT guy at the Register going to fix these comments so that when you click “reply” your comment shows up directly under the comment you’re replying to?? The forum has gotten better, but c’mon guys!
I think it was a two-party eff-up. TJ passed off the local organization of the stop to people whose primary goal is the maintenance of that park and not the feeding of riders. So that was a poor decision on his part. Then you’ve got the DNR and they just were totally out of their depth. The lesson- if you’re a brand manager don’t pass off…[Read more]
I guess this just needs to be put plainly: the Iowa DNR is a branch of law enforcement. So some unaccountable bureaucrats with a long list of policies and procedures were put in a position of having an effect on RAGBRAI’s brand and they failed miserably. If you’re surprised, well, I don’t know what to tell you.

The Iowa DNR are just about as much fun as a root canal on a good day and getting a permit to sell food on their premises nearly certainly involves an unspeakable sex act, so I’m not thinking that stop was part of…[Read more]
Its so flat. The biggest hills are highway overpasses. The towns are far more prosperous and fun but I find riding through that part of the state to be similar to driving I-80 through Nebraska during the day.
My 12 y/o son made it all 480 miles. He only complained twice and even at that we stopped in the next town, he got something to eat and was then fine. In fact, food was the biggest thing that I had to stay on top of with him. Some of those long stretches caused him to run out of gas and we just had to find watermelon or something along the way.…[Read more]
My opinion as well. Experienced RAGBRAI riders leave very early or after 8:30 so that there is enough sight distance to be able to see the road conditions in time to avoid bad cracks. There were NO segments of road I saw where I could not choose a safe route through the pavement problems.
If you’re getting surprised by pavement issues you’re…[Read more]
