I did not ride Saturday but have ridden that 72 mile trail / loop multiple times. I am very familiar with that ride and trail right after Panora. That said, it’s flat for the most part so no real high speeds at all. I know the traffic is heavy during Baccoon but what happened? Purely out of curiosity, what happened?
Interesting questions and observations. I only ride RAGBRAI so that is my only perspective. That being said, the organizers have said multiple times that they have north of 17,000 registered riders. Add in several thousand bandits and I think we’ll likely have 20k this year. As far as organization and details……the overnight towns seem to be a…[Read more]
I always tell people that $100 a day in cash, small bills, is likely a good ballpark. Then you can charge extras in the overnight towns when the opportunity arises to use a credit card. My $100 does include a few beers each day and evening and it includes ALOT of generous tips and donations to the many fundraisers you will run across each day. I…[Read more]
$1000, wow really? Hell, it’s only 30 miles or so…..Since you have time, you could probably find an Uber out of LaCross to come get you for a heck of a lot less than $1000. Not sure how adventurous you are but maybe hitchhike? You’d probably get picked up by some other RAGBRAI’rs heading that way, especially if you’re holding a creative sign…[Read more]
robert – I wouldn’t worry too much about your packet yet. If you dont have it by the 2nd week in July, you might want to worry a bit but I doubt you’ll need to. Sometimes they go out a little earlier and sometimes a little later. Like many things with RAGBRAI (waiting in lines for example) patience is a virtue. It will get there eventually. See…[Read more]
There might be a team out there willing to help you out but if worst comes to worst, you could always ride the RAGBRAI sag wagon to the next overnight town. You just may have to wait a bit for it to roll around. Also, just fyi, keep in mind the meeting town is not always half way for the day. Some days it is much shorter than half way and some…[Read more]
This post has no reference to pie, kybos, beer or Iowa hospitality so you may get limited feedback :) But, as a retired exec. in the wireless telecomm space, I can only tell you that not enough carriers deploy COW’s, micro-cells and leaky co-ax (did I just give my away my age :) Seriously, dont count on great voice or data service, especially late…[Read more]
FYI, weeklong wristbands will be a dime a dozen in short order. Start making your plans now as you will be in Iowa in July if all you need is an aftermarket wristband…..and you certainly won’t need to spend $350 if you dont want to. Give someone the $175 they paid or wait till right before the ride and get one for even less. And welcome to what…[Read more]
Unless your the first one out, there will be no surprises. Just follow the thousands in front of you and then the thousands behind will follow you, etc, etc. It all works out splendidly. And to be fair, I think the final “official” route wont be out till July after the pre-ride is complete. I remember in 2018 they changed the route maybe a few…[Read more]
Jboz – Many, many times I have left my bigger bag under the RAGBRAI baggage truck overnight after taking a small bag out to head to a hotel or host home. The bag was always just fine and untouched the next morning. That being said, I am 99.9% certain that the baggage crew will not load your bag the next morning for you if you do not claim it. They…[Read more]
Jboz – Ok I got it. I use the RAGBRAI baggage truck and would have to ride to Emmetsburg to get my bag no matter what, that is what I was thinking. If you are turning off the route north of West Bend you must be a bagger or have someone driving for you with your stuff. Either way, your plan sounds like a good one. See you in July.
Nearly all charters and transportation will take you back to Sergeant Bluff, the starting point of the ride. I know of no service that will take you back to a particular city along the route. Your best bet is have a friend meet you and drive you back. Second best bet is to advertise on here later this summer and maybe someone will be in the same…[Read more]
