MercyOne and RAGBRAI Health Tip #4: Hand Hygiene
- 20 July, 2021

With summer in full swing and lots of opportunities for outdoor fun, it’s a good time for a reminder about proper hand hygiene. Whether you’re attending a county fair, hitting the ballpark, spending the day on the water or participating in a biking event, it’s important to remember to wash your hands regularly – because germs are everywhere!
If you have access to a sink, of course washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the best option – but that’s not always available at our outdoor events. So, carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you. We recommend a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Hand sanitizers can quickly reduce germs on hands, but they don’t eliminate all types of germs, so it’s still important to wash your hands with soap and water as soon as you’re able.
Remember to use good hand hygiene throughout the day, especially before and after eating – and definitely after using a restroom or portable toilet. Pay attention to children’s hand washing, too. Good hand hygiene is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick so that you can get out there and enjoy all the summer activities – safely!
