MercyOne and RAGBRAI Health Tips #6: Benefits of Exercise

There are lots of health benefits to regular exercise, including reducing your risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and Alzheimer’s Disease. It can also improve your sleep quality and help you maintain a healthy weight.

“Exercise is one of the best things you can do to achieve optimal health,” said Merriam Lake, health promotion facilitator of wellness services at MercyOne.

When you exercise, there’s an increased blood flow to the brain, which improves energy levels and mood.

“I know that if I’m having a sluggish day, a slight headache, or even just a bad day in general if I go exercise I will feel so much better,” Lake said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Physical activity is anything that gets you up and moving, including going on a walk with your dog or taking the stairs instead of an elevator.

“Whatever you like to do, find that and make sure you’re getting enough exercise during the day to keep yourself as healthy as possible,” she said.
