Outdoor festivals or activities such as RAGBRAI and alcohol consumption often go hand-in-hand.
“When choosing to consume alcohol at these summertime events, it is important to keep in mind that alcohol is a diuretic and increases internal body temperature,” says family physician Ambrose Munro, MD. “Limiting alcohol use and remembering to stay hydrated is essential, especially when it is warm outside, and you are exerting yourself during activities like bike riding and outdoor festivals.”
One strategy for staying hydrated is as simple as switching between water and alcohol every other drink. Consciously limiting alcohol consumption and staying hydrated during these outdoor activities can help with peace of mind and, in return, add to the fun.
In addition to staying hydrated, it is also important to remember accidents are more likely to happen when alcohol is involved. As a bicyclist, being cognizant of your surroundings while riding is crucial to avoid injury; whether that accident involves another cyclist, vehicle, or yourself.
