MercyOne and RAGBRAI Health Tips #5: Food for Fuel

When you’ve got a 60-mile bike ride ahead of you, it’s important to eat the foods that will give you the energy you need to make it to the finish line.
The best foods to fuel your exercise really depend on the type of performance you’re after, said Mary Steffensmeier, a registered dietician with MercyOne.
If you’re aiming to finish first, eat easy-to-digest carbohydrates like a banana or a bagel before you take off to help keep you going. Then, once you’ve finished the activity, add in foods that have protein and fat, like chocolate milk or pizza.
If you’re only looking to enjoy the ride, you can indulge in a more varied diet and still feel fine, Steffensmeier said.
“Think about your pace,” she said. “If you’re out there going at a pretty fast pace, try to think about special fuel with more carbohydrates and lower fat.”
