Mohawk, bag toss draw riders to Brighton party oasis

(just outside) Brighton, Ia. — Cyclists who complained about too few beer stops along today’s route quenched their thirst with the help of a 12-inch mohawk.

“ICE! COLD! BEEEER!” Amy Greiner shouted through a megaphone to RAGBRAI riders on the west edge of town, atop the Team Bricky bus.

Team members named Greiner, of nearby Washington, their director of marketing for the day. The faux mohawk she sported was the work of a friend who used hair pins, fake stripes of colored hair, and “a ton” of hairspray to craft the look, Greiner said.

Greiner said the most effective ways to grab riders’ attention was with the beer, and by showing some skin. She got the party started at about 9 a.m. and hadn’t seen what was going on in town, but she was sure it was “nothing compared to what we got here.”

Terry’s Feed Service hosted Greiner, the mohawk and cyclists for the event, which had food, beer, music and games. Riders stopped to toss horseshoes and bean bags, and a sand volleyball net was ready for play.

Derek Day, 28, of Des Moines, tossed bags with his fellow member of Team Xtreme.

“Today’s ride was very easy, very flat, but there weren’t near enough beer stops,” he said.

About a dozen members of Team Bricky partied with Greiner on the top of their bus, which Team leader Larry Yoder, of Riverside, said will be decomissioned after this year’s ride.

“It’s got a lot of problems. A broken piston and stuff,” he said. “Know anyone who wants to buy a bus?”

The mohawk isn’t included.
