Dr. Larry Becker was killed this past week while training for the RAGBRAI by a hit and run driver near his home in Boerne, Texas. Larry had participated in many RAGBRAIs over the years with his son and friends.
Larry was born in Primghar and attended both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa.
Sadly, he had been struck by a car previously while training for the 2010 RAGBRAI and had to miss it that year. Larry was a doctor of dermatology and a retired Army colonel. He leaves behind a widow, two sons and a granddaughter. Larry lived in Boerne, Texas.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Becker family.

This actually made me cry. This guy was a Doctor, husband, father, grandfather, Army colonel, and probably a lot more that it doesn’t say. I look up to this kind of person. I’m so sorry for him and his family, Prayers for him/them today while I ride………….God bless.

Our thoughts and prayers to the family-what a horrible situatiuon…
It’s at times like this that we are reminded how big and spread-out the RAGBRAI family is. Eternal rest grant unto Dr. Larry, O Lord, and my your perpetual light shine upon him; may his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. And God please let us feel your hand on the shoulders of all the rest of us as we do our RAGBRAI training.
Chuck, your prayer honoring this man was so heartfelt. Thank you for those kind words. Very sad for that family to lose their dad and husband and sad for the Ragbrai family who will be one less this year without him.
I never rode RAGBRAI, however, I did know Dr. Becker for 28 years. I am touched that Iowa and RAGBRAI has honored him in this way. He is a shining example that with a humble heart devoted to God that ones influence stretches far beyond what will ever be seen while on planet Earth. His legacy and impacts continues to inspire me.
Thank you RAGBRAI community. May you continue to honor Dr. Becker by riding with greater fervor and passion as you remember him.
Dr Becker was my Uncle and I will miss him greatly. I am so glad that the man who hit him confessed. As my Aunt Dorothy said they don’t hate the man just that they want the person to take responsibility for what they did. I love you Aunt Dorothy!
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Dr. Becker. In 2010, I crashed while training at a local forest preserve. God, and my helmet, protected me. And then, on Ragbrai the following week, I ventured past the cyclist that crashed and later died while on the ride. Every time I ride, I thank God for the opportunity to do so, and I will carry the memory of Dr. Becker with me as I go on the 2012 ride. Again, so sorry to hear this tragic news…
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Dr. Becker. May God place peace in your hearts.
