Overnight hosts needed when RAGBRAI rolls through Des Moines

Want to get involved with RAGBRAI when it comes through Des Moines but unable to ride?
Organizers of the popular ride’s July overnight stay are still looking for people to host cyclists.
The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa runs from July 21 to 27 this year and is expected to draw about 10,000 riders. That number is expected to swell in when it comes through the capital city Tuesday for the first time in 16 years.
About 75 groups –ranging from two people to about 40 – have requested a host, but so far only about 25 have volunteered to put them up for the night, said Katie Fencl, a co-chair for Des Moines’ RAGBRAI organizing committee.
“It’s an opportunity to build new relationships and be a part of RAGBRAI without riding it,” Fencl said.
Many of those seeking host homes are from out-of-state and are hoping to get to know Iowans while they’re here she said. “It’s something riders and locals both really seem to enjoy.”
The specific requirements vary by request. Some teams are looking for backyards where they can pitch tents. Others are hoping for an air-conditioned bedroom or garage space.
Fencl said hosts along the route, particularly near Valley Junction and in south Des Moines near Water Works Park and the airport, would be ideal because riders would only have a short detour from the official route.
Those interested in hosting riders should contact Margie Flowers by email at ragbraihousing@dm-iowa.com.

Should have room indoors for a couple or two. I hab e done 9 of 11 Ragbrais but cantvgo due to work commotments. Bed couches and floorspa cc e available bikes parked in garage. Guests can eat out or we are happy to grill and get a decent breakfast.
We live near I80/35 in Urbandale. We have a finished basement with a bedroom (queen size bed), bathroom, and a fridge. We also have a single bed on the main floor. We would be glad to host 2-3 people. We have stayed l with several host families during our past RAGBRAI rides and welcomed a firm bed, AC and a hot shower.
