Bancroft — Grill smoke is the dominant smell here in the hometown of Mr. Pork Chop, but careful noses caught a whiff of something else . . . something refreshing . . . something like a York Peppermint Patty?

“We’re doing a peppermint aromatherapy spritz to kind of cool people off,” said licensed massage therapist Christina Gibbs, owner of Spa-Dee-Dah on the main drag.

She stood on the curb, armed with a plastic spray bottle of instant revitalization. Most cyclists were wary at first — until they felt the magic dew.

“Oooooh!” said pretty much everybody who submitted themselves to the powers of the mist. One woman said, “This is the best I’ll smell all week!”

The Spa-Dee-Dah staff offered chair massages and foot massages, too, inside the quiet air-conditioned solitude just steps from the sweltering noise. A jug of cucumber water welcomed visitors right inside the door.

But the free peppermint spritz was the main draw, right past the smoky piles of pork.

“It really helps revive the senses,” Gibbs said. “It kind of brings you back to life after you’ve eaten a little bit.”
