RAGBRAI 2012: Chainsaw sculptor in Vinton

Vinton – Any guesses what the local cabinet maker Brian Parr to welcome RAGBRAI into town?
Maybe you’re stumped.
He took a chainsaw to a half dozen white pine stumps and carved out a bear, a pair of morel mushrooms, a bald eagle and a welcome sign. At mid-day, with a layer of sweat and sawdust stuck to his face, he was still planning to create a few more.
The stumps were collected from last year’s wind storm, which walloped Vinton and nearby Garrison, another stop on today’s route, where locals were raising money to fix the wind-damaged fire station.
Parr’s chainsaw handiwork can be seen all over Vinton, where full trees once stood where his stump-sculptures do now.
