RAGBRAI Route Announcement Party set for January 25, 2020 at 7 p.m.

Good afternoon,

Today the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Iowa Bicycling Action Fund issued a public statement of support for RAGBRAI. We are grateful to them for their continued support. It was important for us to maintain our long-standing partnership with them based on our shared mission to promote safe and enjoyable bicycling across Iowa. Over the past eight weeks, we’ve met on several occasions to listen to each other and build a renewed partnership. We are confident the partnership will benefit both organizations for years to come. Below is their statement of support.

We are thrilled to announce that the RAGBRAI XLVIII Route Announcement Party will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. following the Iowa Bike Expo in the Community Choice Credit Ballroom. The Route Announcement party benefits the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. For more information, visit https://iowabicyclecoalition.org/routeannouncement/

Thank you,

RAGBRAI leadership

Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Iowa Bicycling Action Fund Statement of Support for RAGBRAI:

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Iowa Bicycling Action Fund boards of directors have voted to also endorse RAGBRAI.  The key members of the boards and staff met with RAGBRAI staff to discuss their commitment to the safety and future success of the ride.

The past few weeks have allowed us to reflect on what bicycling means to Iowa. We have been involved with RAGBRAI for the past 16 years. The partnership with RAGBRAI has been integral to advancing our mission of promoting safe end enjoyable bicycling through education, events, better policy, and a growing community of supporters.

Moving forward, we believe RAGBRAI is committed to enhance Iowa bicycle advocacy, promote bicycling culture overall, and contribute toward the state of Iowa’s reputation and economic vibrancy. The proposed changes shared with the board were positive for Iowa and we look forward to the implementation.

Dieter Drake will have a fresh perspective to lead RAGBRAI. Wes Hall returns to the event much needed institutional knowledge and relationships. They seemed focused to continue the iconic annual bicycle ride across Iowa, not only in 2020 but for many years to come.

For 47 years, RAGBRAI is woven into Iowa’s culture and tradition. This new era in Iowa bicycling has the potential for greater success and opportunity.  We look forward to the future of Iowa bicycling.

It all came down to money, membership and credibility , not safety. That is why I dropped my membership.

What is the story behind the 2020 Ragbrai logo? Guitars and “on the road again” hints Willie Nelson – making an appearance? Doing part of ride? Passing out weed as riders go by? : ). Like the logo but not sure of rider facing backward on the front of jersey. Maybe front and back logos could switch places. But this is a minuscule quibble. Kudos to RAGBRAI over the years. I was on several Ragbrais in the 1980s and hope to do more. The landscape is the same, I have a better bike and I’m only 30 plus years older so there shouldn’t be any problems.

Seems counterintuitive to endorse one event over another. If the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Iowa Bicycling Action Fund are truly interested in their stated objectives then they should endorse any bicycling event that is consistent with those objectives and shines a light on cycling and safety/awareness of cyclers. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not necessarily a fan of TJ and the gang’s actions just like I’m not a fan of Gannett’s actions. To the casual observer, anytime bikes are riding in Iowa is a good thing. This appears to be another in a long list of petty actions where bicycling through Iowa is concerned. Time to move on and get focused on riding again.

100% agree with what Todd said. I also see where Jose is spot on too. Ragbrai is surviving on its past accolades. This will be a very important year for both rides to mature and put the majority of the focus on safety and the riders.

In the words of Freddie, my favorite rock singer, “Let’s get on our bikes and RIDE!”
