RAGBRAI Virtually the Best Bicycle Ride DAY 5

  • 23 July, 2020

It’s all downhill from here (ha, kidding!)! Day 5 of RAGBRAI Virtually the Best Bicycle Ride presented by TIDE. Today you can go the distance and hit a century with the Karras Loop! It’s also Rhubarb Rumble day! When The Des Moines Register and NPR (No Pie Refused) will face off in an epic pie eating contest. This is a fundraiser for the Lytton (Pie Capital of Iowa) Fire Station! More on that below.

We can’t wait to share Anamosa with you in 2021 but until then we’ve pulled together some fun facts and trivia for you. Anamosa is home to Pumpkinfest, Grant Wood and his artist’s colony, and yes, an infamous 120 year old stone prison.

RECIPE SPOTLIGHT

We couldn’t forget the food. Each day we will share a recipe from a friend of RAGBRAI. Today we have two recipes for you to enjoy!

First up is a Brownie Ice Cream Sandwich from Blue Bunny! Bonus points if they’re the brownies with the swirls of peanut butter in them.

Since it’s Rhubarb Rumble day, it’s only right that we feature this recipe: it’s Lytton Iowa’s Marlene Glasnapp’s Rhubarb Pie. Notice she didn’t give us the crust recipe – that part’s secret!

RHUBARB RUMBLE “VIRTUALLY THE BEST” PIE EATING CONTEST

This is the main event. Tune in as The Des Moines Register and NPR (No Pie Refused) square off in a battle royal to see who can stuff their face with pie the fastest and take home the coveted rolling pin trophy.  The rumble will stream live on the RAGBRAI Virtually the Best private Facebook page at 4:00 p.m. CST (5:00 p.m. ET)

(Lytton firehouse construction to date.)

The Rhubarb Rumble will benefit Lytton Iowa’s firehouse construction.  Lytton is the self-proclaimed pie capital of Iowa and makes its RAGBRAI debut in 2021 on the second day of the ride. A special edition “I WON EVERY PIE CONTEST” on RAGBRAI 2020 t-shirt, designed by RAYGUN, will be available for purchase during the virtual ride week. $10 from every t-shirt sale will be donated to help Lytton build the firehouse. Click this text to see the t-shirt!

You can also donate directly to their GoFundMe here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/lytton-fire-station

Let’s make sure they can complete their Fire Station so we can go there and eat pie in 2021!

*You must be a registered virtual rider to watch the live pie-eating contest.
