RAGBRAI riders could “milk” a cow in Monroe without the risk of spilling even a drop of milk.
A painted cow with water-filled udders stood outside Jersey Freeze, a Monroe ice cream shop, on Wednesday. RAGBRAI riders could “milk” the cow and take picture with it.
“We’re the last stop out of Monroe,” said Jill Munson, co-owner of Jersey Freeze. “We want to be the caricature of Monroe.”
The cow is meant to be a Jersey cow, to represent Jersey Freeze, Munson said. She explained how the cow is brand new and was painted by a Monroe resident.
“We’re just trying to make for a fun experience,” Munson said. “We want them to remember Jersey Freeze and to remember Monroe.”
Munson has never experienced RAGBRAI — she has spent her summers working at Jersey Freeze, she said. RAGBRAI has also not been through Monroe since 1992.
“This is a new experience,” she said. “We have no idea what to expect.”
Munson and her staff worked Wednesday morning to prepare for the rush of riders who would soon pass by Jersey Freeze. She said she hoped the cow would catch their eyes.
“Anything to make them stop to get ice cream,” she said.
