Riders get sneak peek at butter cow

RAGBRAI riders got a sneak peek Wednesday of butter sculptures that will be unveiled next month during the Iowa State Fair.

Some of the cyclists who peddled through the fairgrounds in Des Moines stopped at the Agriculture Building to watch artist Sarah Pratt work her magic.

Pratt has produced butter sculptures for the State Fair since 2006.

This morning, Pratt worked on a sculpture of Abe Lincoln. An unfinished butter cow was also on display. Both pieces will be finished by Aug. 8.

“I’ve never heard of a butter sculpture – this is a first for me,” said Lee Echert, of East Granby, Conn. “But I like it.”

Sue Alseth, of Footville, Wisc., posed with other RAGBRAI riders for a picture in front of the butter cow.

“It’s a great photo opp,” said Alseth.

This year marked the first time RAGBRAI riders have pedaled through the fairgrounds. The Iowa State Fair, which runs Aug. 8 to Aug. 18, attracts more than million visitors annually.

Des Moines cyclist Mike O’Connell said he thinks getting a preview of the butter cow and other attractions will convince some riders to return for the fair.

“I’m sure a lot of people who are from out-of-state have never been here; it’s just a beautiful fairgrounds,” said the 52-year-old. “I think it will spark some interest.”
