Riders line up for breakfast in Wesley

Wesley – The smell of sausage and pancakes drew thousands of people off the bike route and into this town Tuesday morning.

A line had already started to form in front of a park shelter that housed a fundraiser breakfast for the local fire department, community club and first responders when the Studers showed up at 5:45 a.m.

David, Mark and Mike Studer wasted no time taking their posts at the grill to prepare enough sausage to feed the hungry bicyclists. Soon the line extended across the park to the edge of the street. Three hours later, it was just as long.

David Studer, 62; Mark Studer, 57; and Mike Studer, 53, of Wesley, cook sausage for thousands of riders Tuesday.

Typically, only weddings and funerals could cause that kind of line in Wesley, remarked Mike Studer. Today it was a $6 meal of pancakes, sausage and juice.

“It’s unbelievable,” Mike Studer said.

The Studer cousins spent the day leaning over the grill on an already hot day to make sure each sausage link was grilled to perfection.

Mark Studer said the secret was to make sure each got up to 165 degrees. He measured each with a meat thermometer to make sure they were up to standards.

Mike’s secret was a little more lax.

“Don’t burn them,” he said.
