As many of you know, Greenfield was recently struck by a terrible tornado. We rode through today, and although the cleanup efforts are impressive, the tornado’s effect on the community is devastating. At this time we do not know the impact to the ride. Our focus right now is lending our support to our partners in Greenfield in whatever ways we can.

When we get to Winterset we’ll have conquered the Hilliest of the Hilliest! And you know what, it was hilly but it was drop dead gorgeous and worth every pedal. Winterset’s headliner is central Iowa’s fastest growing cover band, Not Quite Brothers

  • Day 1 Mileage: 41.9
  • Day 1 Feet of Climb: 2,435
  • Optional Gravel Routes:
  • Distance – 4.6 miles, 3 miles
  • Climb – 460 feet, 192 feet

Today we started in Glenwood and pedaled to Silver City, Henderson, Emerson, and on in to Red Oak

The first theme of Day 1 is the Missouri River Tire Dip! As with tradition, Glenwood will offer a dip site in the Missouri River to dip their front tire on Saturday before the ride. Be sure to follow the Glenwood RAGBRAI Facebook page for updates on their plans for our tire dip.

The second theme of the day is the Mile of Silence. In memory of the riders we’ve lost, we will observe a mile of silence just outside of Glenwood. The mile will start approximately one mile past Glenwood. There will be signs between the two towns marking the exact location. Thank you to The Iowa Bicycle Coalition for providing the signage.

Red Oak is in the heart of southwest Iowa, and their theme is Pedal to the Pumpkin! Once you see their vibrant orange water tower from miles away, you’ll know why they set the theme!

Day 0 – Arrival in Glenwood and RAGBRAI Expo

We’ve just arrived in Glenwood, and tomorrow we will begin the RAGBRAI Route Inspection Pre Ride! This seven-day journey across the state is RAGBRAI’s 19th Route Inspection. We have invited 15 riders to join our team as we ride across the state (approximately) 50 days in advance of RAGBRAI. Members of the RAGBRAI Route Inspection Team and Crew include VE Cycling Director Anne Lawrie, RAGBRAI Director Matt Phippen, the Iowa Bicycle Coalition’s Executive Director Luke Hoffman, Andrea Parrott and Kathy Murphy of the JustGoBIke Podcast, and representatives from law enforcement, RAGBRAI communities, a bike shop, Bike Iowa, and more. We will ride each mile of the route on the same day of the week as RAGBRAI. Our goals on this 434 mile journey include:

  • Ensure the safety of the route, noting cracks, potholes, traffic patterns and more.
  • Show off the wonderful communities of the RAGBRAI LI route!
  • Review updated plans and answer questions for the RAGBRAI LI communities.
  • Allow communities to get a sense for when riders will appear in their town
  • Finalize the RAGBRAI LI route and GPS files.
  • Show you exact data from a variety of real riders as they experience RAGBRAI LI. This year we’ve partnered with Wahoo and RideWithGPS to give you a live look at our progress across the state

Glenwood

Loess get it started! Today we are previewing our visit to Glenwood, IA. Riders will gather in Glenwood on Saturday, July 30 to prepare for the ride and to attend the RAGBRAI Expo! We like to say the Expo is where RAGBRAI begins. The RAGBRAI Expo will feature over 50 industry vendors, the RAGBRAI merchandise trailers and outlet tent, live broadcasts from the JustGoBike Podcast, RAGBRAI official bike shops, food vendors, beer garden, and live entertainment! Glenwood’s headliner is Billy McGuigan! Get ready to groove to the iconic sounds of the 60s, 70s, and 80s as Billy and his talented team bring the ultimate rock experience to Glenwood!

Glenwood will provide a memorable start to RAGBRAI LI as it is nestled within the Loess (pronounced LUSS) Hills – notorious to RAGBRAI riders as much for their hills as their drop-dead-gorgeous beauty. Off we go! For more information on Glenwood and their RAGBRAI plans, follow them on Facebook or check out their page on RAGBRAI.com!

Since riding my first RAGBRAI in 2015, this will be only the second ride I will miss. In the past, I have enjoyed keeping tabs on the pre-ride inspection and often wondered…”How do you get on THAT ride”. Skipping this year with the promise that my daughter will again join me in Iowa next year, I plan on following the pre-riders and will imagine myself out there with you!

Maybe some of you can find time to join a few of us RAGBRAI’ers on the BIGBAM on the Katy in October. It would be great to meet/ride with you!
