- Wear bright clothing and have a headlight/taillight—especially at night
- Avoid biking at night
- Bike in the right lane
- Ride to the right and leave room for others to pass on the left
- Yield to vehicle traffic
- Don’t assume you have the right of way
- Be predictable—ride in a straight line
- Indicate your turns, slowing, and stopping with hand signals
- Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals
- Be cooperative with RAGBRAI officials.
- Obey state troopers and other law enforcement
- Keep your eyes and ears open—no headphones
- Cross railroad tracks at a right angle
- Beware of loose gravel and debris
- Avoid wide cracks
- Pace yourself—RAGBRAI is not a race
- Don’t drink alcohol and bike
- Stop at the right edge of the roadway and immediately move to shoulder
- Don’t stop at the crest of a hill or on a curve—it is difficult for other riders to see you
- Be courteous. Yield to passing vehicles and other riders.
