Safety Tips

Follow the tips below to help you, and those around you, have a enjoyable and safe RAGBRAI experience.

  • Ride a bicycle that is in good repair—especially the brakes
  • Wear a helmet
  • Wear bright clothing and have a headlight/taillight—especially at night
  • Avoid biking at night
  • Bike in the right lane
  • Ride to the right and leave room for others to pass on the left
  • Yield to vehicle traffic
  • Don’t assume you have the right of way
  • Be predictable—ride in a straight line
  • Indicate your turns, slowing, and stopping with hand signals
  • Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals
  • Be cooperative with RAGBRAI officials.
  • Obey state troopers and other law enforcement
  • Keep your eyes and ears open—no headphones
  • Cross railroad tracks at a right angle
  • Beware of loose gravel and debris
  • Avoid wide cracks
  • Pace yourself—RAGBRAI is not a race
  • Don’t drink alcohol and bike
  • Stop at the right edge of the roadway and immediately move to shoulder
  • Don’t stop at the crest of a hill or on a curve—it is difficult for other riders to see you
  • Be courteous. Yield to passing vehicles and other riders.
  • Be considerate—watch out for others as well as yourself
