CHOW DOWN: Get your early-morning grub at Ventura. Restaurants include Sugar & Slice, which serves ice cream and pizza, and the Sandy Clam Bar & Pizza Oven.

BUDDY HOLLY: Clear Lake is known for the Surf Ballroom, the location where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper played for the last time before dying in a plane crash in a nearby cornfield in February 1959.

METAL MUSIC: Pull on those leather pants, because the ’80s are returning to Mason City. The town will host a variety of bands, headlined by Poison’s Bret Michaels.
