There may be different spins or points of view on the story, but my opinion is the principal has made the wrong decision. It delayed the arrival of some staff and students. If it was an organized ride and planned months in advance, it probably still would have caused delays. I don’t see it as a big issue.
Re-read the second link. “Getting there late to school”? You mean to tell me that in their entire high-school career none of these persons were ever late to school, ever before? I’ll bet a dime they were late because they were told to stay in place until a police officer could be dispatched “for their protection”. As for the staff and others; too bad that their mommies couldn’t come roaring up to pit lane in their soccer-mom-mobiles and jettison their little darlings like usual.
“Dangerous” due to using the traffic lanes? “Disruptive to traffic flow”? Only for someone who hasn’t read the law and noted that bicycles are also traffic and entitled to use the lanes.
But what do you expect from someone in Michigan, whose only claim to fame has been its connection to the automobile industry? -“BB”-
Having read both sides of this, I still have to side with the kids here. The school admins need to grow up and recognize this for what it was: A safe and fun activity shared by their outgoing seniors. At my senior prank day some kids almost burned the building down, so I say the school should count themselves lucky that they have more responsible youths.
And if this story gets your blood boi9ling, you should definitely read the article “Why Johnny Can’t Ride” from the most recent edition of Bicycling magazine!
Every year H.S. seniors at every school in the country get together to celebrate the end of their H.S. education, the beginning of their college or working years. Most know things will never be the same. All in all, no one was hurt, no one was insulted, the police was consulted ahead of time, as far as rebellions go, this one is about as mild as I have ever heard of. However, unless the administration takes some sort of action the students don’t feel as if they have accomplished anything.
Time hasn’t changed much when it comes to senior “fun”…only the pranks seem to have. According to my dad, he and a few of his buddies managed to get a cow up two flights of stairs of the high school and into the assembly room. A problem arose, however. The cow went up the stairs with gusto, but refused to go down them. Eventually, the school had to get a crane and take her out of the second story window, but that was after things got a little messy in the assembly…and that was in 1930 in good ol’ Woodbine High. Cheers. 8-O
“This morning’s events caused an enormous disruption to our instructional day” So it delayed locker clean up day and grab ass in the hallway for 15 minutes…
I live in this area so I’ve followed this from the start…Last night the Principal was apologizing for overreacting but still tried to spin it that there was a communication break down between the City Officials (the mayor that handed out donuts to the kids) and City Agencies (Walker police for providing the escort)
The police responded to that statement by saying they would launch an investigation to see if there was a break down in communication…LOL
This morning’s events caused an enormous disruption to our instructional day… …dismiss the involved students for the remainder of the school day.
Where is the logic? Motorist are a few minutes late for the “instructional day” or those in charge send 65 students home so that there is NO instruction for those students that day. Stupid is as Stupid does.
One of the favorite HS pranks I heard was releasing three(3) goats in the school with numbers painted on them 1, 3, 4. Several hours were spent looking for a nonexistent goat with a number 2 painted on it.
Typical administration reaction I would say, after several years teaching. Only after public outcry (read property tax payers), does Hitler back-track. Terrible to mess with the Kingdom.
I dont see how school administrators can do anything when it is a city problem. These kids were not in school at the time. Were they suspsnded for being late? Doesnt sound like it. The city cops didnt ticket them for holding up traffic so being late would be the only thing the school can get them for in my opinion. I would be one pissed parent I can tell you that.

Wow,if that’s not proof that the same story can be spun two completely different ways, I don’t know what is.

I’d like to see someone suspended and it wouldn’t be any of the students…

unreal, Arizona school bans kids from riding bikes to school.
“The streets are marked with bike paths but are not wide enough for children or parents to safely use them.”
